SUSTAINABLE CHOICES MAKE A DIFFERENCE…
The goal is Progress Over Perfection.
Zero-waste and carbon-neutral events are ideal, but we think it is important to support and celebrate all the positive steps that event hosts, planners and vendors can take to make a positive impact, not only on their own events but also in fostering a sustainability mindset in our community.
PROGRESS WE ARE ALREADY MAKING AT SC SOCIETY HALL
- All in one Recycling – We work with our vendors to maximize use of the City of Charleston’s blue-bin recycling program
- Glass Recycling – We partner with Fisher Recycling to make sure that as much glass as possible is actually recycled (as opposed to ending up in landfill) or re-purposed for use by Glass Eco Surfaces
- Candle Recycling- Our friends at ReCandle Charleston are no longer in operation, so we are currently looking for a local candle recyler to collect and recycle wax that will ultimately become beautiful new candles.
- Composting – We maintain a composting bin on site
- Food Waste – We partner with CuisineRescue.org ourselves, and encourage our vendors to work with them as well, to re-direct unused food to those in need in the Lowcountry, instead of to our local landfill.
- Cigarette Liter Prevention – We partner with Keep Charleston Beautiful and Terracycle to collect and recycle cigarette litter
- Greener Office Practices
- minimize printing
- post-consumer use recycled paper
- Greener Products
- refillable soap
- post-consumer use recycled multi-fold towels
- post-consumer use recycled toilet paper
- LED bulbs
- Efficient Air Conditioning – Our venue utilizes 4 separate HVAC units so we can target our energy use accurately
- Nonprofit Support – We actively support local environmental organizations with their educational and fundraising events
- Environmental Education – We work to educate our event hosts and vendors on opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of their events.
WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW
-
- Think – The most important thing you can do is to start thinking about how you might be able to make your event a little bit greener.
- Choose greener vendors –
- Event Planners: Whatley Wedding Design and Newberry Events both emphasize sustainability practices in their events
- Caterers: Cru Catering , Rosemary & Rye Catering and Duvall Catering all partner with CuisineRescue.org to minimize food waste
- Re-use or recycle your candles
- Re-use or donate your flowers
- Consider sustainability when you select your event supplies
- Avoid unnecessary plastics
